| Starting an exercise program is easy. Staying with it is the challenge. Here's what fitness experts recommend:
Slow down. Beginning exercisers usually walk, run, or swim too hard at first or lift too much weight and then quit because they dread the pain. Sure, you should feel tired after a workout; but an hour later you should feel invigorated. If not, your're doing too much, too soon.
Find a partner. Exercising with someone doubles the chance that you'll stick with it.
Write up a contract. Set realistic goals for yourself and write them down.
Chart your progress. Keep an excercise log and reward yoruself along the way whe you meet specific goals.
Be patient. The first three to six months on a new exercise regimen are the hardest. If you make it to six months, researchers report, odds are good you'll still be working out a year later. |
